My confident son in later life

When you have developed and integrated confidence it becomes an integral part of who you are. It’s a feeling that has nestled itself into your system and it contributes to a solid foundation of your sense of self. This innate confidence might get a wobble (as Ruby Wax experienced), but it quickly bounces back. If you reach that layer, you are sorted.

Confidence is a feeling

When I was on holiday last summer, I was in the pool, hanging on a airbed with my 13 year old son. We were chatting and he asked me if I knew what he was going to be when he was older. I said to him, I would love to know and he answered: “I am going to be a billionaire.”

This boy feels confident. He expresses his wish for the future with a clear certainty. He is not hoping to or wanting to be a billionaire, he is just going to be. There is nothing that will stand in his way. He is clear about it.

When we had dinner we spoke about Ollie’s plans and his 16 year old brother commented: “How is he going to do that? What field does he think that is going to happen in? It is not easy to get there.” Where Ollie saw no obstacles, James immediately went into practicalities and saw problems and difficulties.

Ollie tapped into his feeling of confidence and didn’t give obstacles a second thought. That is the sign of the real confidence.
