tips to manage stress and anxietyTips to manage stress and anxiety

Anxiety is a feeling that can easily take over your mind and your body. When it isn’t reigned in, it will grow wild and totally control you. It’s like a big beast that seems to be in charge of you. However, it doesn’t have to be like that and it doesn’t have to be that difficult to make changes.

In this post I am just offering a few tips, all starting with an S to make it easy to remember them during the Summer.

S – Smile

The power of a smile is incredible. When your muscles make the movement of smiling your brain responds by producing dopamine, serotonin and endorphins. And one of the jobs of these hormones is to eat the stress hormones – like a little Pacman. You don’t have to ‘feel’ it. You can just fake it, but your brain thinks it’s real.

SMS – Soften My Shoulders

Observe your shoulders, notice the tension and then soften them. This will send a message to your brain that there is no danger and body and mind can chill out. To read in more detail, click here.

Silence – Meditate

Moments of silence or meditation allow the brain to resettle. Here is one for you to try.

You can find a variety of meditations on Youtube.

STOP

Sometimes you have to be really firm with yourself . When you feel how anxiety starts to take over, it helps to tell yourself to stop. Walk away, think of something totally different and be firm with yourself. This tip for anxiety can be challenging but it will get easier over time.
