De-stressing at home

De-stressing at home

Recently the press reported that most women feel less stressed at work than at home. Work was the place where they were in control and more or less in charge of what they were doing. Something simple  as finishing a task, was one of the things that was mentioned as a big difference between home and office work.

In an earlier blog, I mentioned four reasons why stress at home is higher, which are multitasking, depending on cooperation of others, being the spider in the web and setting high expectations of yourself. In this blog I will give tips to take control of each area and stress a little bit less.

Multitasking

As our brains can’t handle more than 2 tasks at one time, try to dedicate 10 or 20 minutes to a single task before switching to the next one. It will improve your productivity.

Depending on cooperation of others

Try to plan in a way that makes it easier for you to stay in control. An example that is now a rule in our house: when my son has training at 7, we have to leave at 6.45. I want him to be ready, including shoes, sweater, and drink as early as possible. So, I start asking around 6 if he can get ready, which means he is ready at about 6.40. No need for hurrying anymore….

Spider in the web

Write down the planning of the days and plan in time for you. If you want to go for a class on a Saturday, try to arrange the others around that and communicate clearly that everybody’s needs have to be met. It is not always you who has to give in. It could be that your husband has to go for a shorter bike ride or leaves a bit later.

Unrealistic expectations

Review your expectations. How realistic is it that you deliver to the standards you are setting? What is the price you pay? List your expectations and bring them all down a few nods.
