How mindfulness relates to fireworks and multitasking - Life coaching and meditation Mariette Jansen

This week I attended two Guy Folk’s Firework Nights and it was soooooo festive. The colours, the sounds, the lights, the surprises exploding in the sky, truly magical. And everyone around me was enjoying the magic as well.

What is it about fireworks that is so mesmerizing?

One possible explanation is that the light and colours are feeding our energy bodies, a bit like colour healing.

Mindfulness

Or, it could be that a fireworks event makes people centred and grounded in the moment. I noticed that not one single person around me was fiddling with his phone. Mobiles were only used to take photographs.  Everybody was fully ‘present’, enjoying what was happening.

Multitasking

The multitasking habit, where we do different activities at the same time, means we don’t give our full attention to a single event. As a result we spread ourselves really thin. In doing so, we miss out on deep, encompassing, all embracing experiences. Not only that, we also deplete our energy levels.

Research conducted at Stanford University found that multitasking is less productive than doing a single thing at a time. The researchers also foundmultitasking that people who are regularly bombarded with several streams of electronic information cannot pay attention, recall information, or switch from one job to another as well as those who complete one task at a time.

By jumping and hopping in and out of situations, such enjoying a coffee (while a text message brings the energy of teenage son in), a walk in nature (cut short because you couldn’t let go of your things-to-do list), a craft activity (disturbed by a phone call), we force our mind to be flexible, but we also create more stress.

The fireworks offered the chance to fully focus on the beauty and excitement, without any disturbances. As a result everybody felt positive, happy and energized.
