This book opened the eyes of many victims of narcissistic abuse. It made them understand what narcissism is, how they got affected by it and what to do about it. An overwhelming number of people connected with me to share their stories and ask for support.
Narcissism is a disorder, which is often difficult to detect. Easily denied because the narcissist is clever at hiding their true self and manipulating people around them. This is why it took me 40 years after I left home, at the age of 58, to see my mother for what she really is: a toxic, manipulative and cruel woman. It was only then that I cut the cords. Now, three years later I am creating closure by publishing this book. Aimed to help others to recognise the narcissists in their life quicker than I did. The book also offers tools and techniques to keep yourself safe and sane and deal with them from your power.
A life-changing read From the first line Mariette makes this book so easy to read and the personal documenting is utterly empowering. I could relate to so many of the situations in this book, It is life-changing to realise you are not alone and to learn positive ways to improve your life. I couldn’t put this book down, just brilliant.
I found this book so insightful.
I really appreciated Mariette’s frank encounters of her own experiences. Her way of breaking down the behaviour of narcissists is very accurate and detailed, leaving the reader in no doubt in recognising what they are dealing with and also that they is no point in trying to change the behaviour of a narcissist. I have had a ‘major’ narcissist in my life and now understand why my views and opinions were never valued or accepted and why he always had to decide absolutely everything. A must-read for anyone with a controlling person in their life!
‘How come that someone intelligent and savvy allowed this abuse to go on for decades. Surely, you must have noticed?’
This is what my friend said after we talked about the book that I was writing. Then I got emotional. Another person who didn’t take me seriously. Like so many in the past told me to ‘get on with it’ and ‘make it up with her’.
You only have one mother.

This book will help many people to find their self- belief, self-esteem and true self as they evolve from victim to victory. It seems appropriate that this book will ‘emerge’ at the same time roughly as society does, coming out of the Covid-19 crisis.’ – Linda Sewell
‘Mariette’s knowledge of narcissism helped me to gain clarity and understanding I so desperately needed. The examples of techniques adopted by narcissists resonated deeply, and I was able to view my so-called ‘romantic relationship’ through a completely new lens whilst finding a sense of self-compassion as to why and how certain patterns of behaviour continued to play out. I managed to accept that I was in a psychologically abusive relationship for over 4 years. Thanks to what I learned from this book, I have been able to walk away and now know that I will never find myself in such form of relationship ever again.’ – Nathalie Simmons
