‘I could give up chocolate, but I am not a quitter.’ – Author unknown

Most people have cravings. They can be anything from healthy, hearty to holistic, but as far as I know, there is hardly anyone who doesn’t love chocolate…. And who doesn’t crave it from time to time.

There are several reasons for that.

Firstly, chocolate encourages our brains to produce the ‘feel good’ hormones serotonin, oxytocin and dopamine, which are also produced when we cuddle someone or when we stroke our pet. Literally, a comforter.

Secondly, when we are stressed our body goes in overdrive, produces cortisol, the stress hormone, and is in physical need of extra fuel, preferably fast releasers, such as fat and sugar. Both happily part of chocolate.

Thirdly, the silkiness, smoothness and softness of the texture brings us back to our first days in the world, where feeding time gave us silky, smooth and soft milk, combined with bodily warmth and the sense of safety. Chocolate taps into our earliest and deepest experiences.

No wonder we crave……

Unfortunately, there is a downside to the craving, which is weight gain, reduced fitness and a health risk.

A recent study discovered how mindfulness meditation helps people reduce their cravings. Read more.
