Julia McPherson, complementary therapist, reflexologist, and founder of  Harmony Treatments, explains some of the backgrounds of reflexology and the benefits. Especially related to stress issues.

Reflexology – it’s just a foot rub isn’t it?

That’s a question I get asked quite often by people who have never experienced this holistic therapy for themselves. But it is so much more than a pleasant and relaxing foot massage.

Reflexology is a non-invasive, gentle and holistic therapy, with its roots in ancient Egypt.  It is based on the belief that the whole body is mapped out on the feet (and hands).  So a system of reflex points (areas) on the feet corresponds with every organ and body system.  For example, the ball on the underneath of your big toe relates to your head and brain.

In a reflexology session I work over each of the reflexes (areas) using a combination of specialised reflexology movements (such as thumb-walking), pressure and massage techniques.  By doing so I aim to stimulate blood flow and the nervous system, remove any energy blockages, aid relaxation and release of tension, and encourage the body to achieve its own healthy balance.

At a very simple level, it is a deeply relaxing hands-on therapy.  You relax and your body responds – your physical stress switch gets flicked to ‘off’ and your body starts to work as it was meant to.

Reflexology has many benefits – not only can it help you relax, it improves mood, helps you to sleep (great if you suffer with insomnia), relieves tension and improves your sense of well-being.

Used in conjunction with other mind-calming therapies, like meditation, reflexology may be just the thing to help you get a restful and reviving night’s sleep.  It doesn’t tickle, it won’t hurt and it’s an hour or so of time and attention dedicated just to you and your wellbeing.  What’s not to like?!

Be well,

Julia
